Why are so many people choosing solar heating – right now?

A record number of homeowners ordered our award winning zero carbon operation solar water heating panels last month (May 2010) because, I think, of the following factors:

Midsummer’s day is only a month away. Domestic solar water heating is bought rather like ice cream – more in summer – so we have brought extra solar installers on board to cope with rising demand for Solartwin solar panels. Average June sunlight energy levels contain about six times more energy that December’s. Grab this summer’s solar energy bulge!

Political and economic change...

UK’s “Low Carbon” Capital grants may be about to get the chop. These popular cash grants of £400 in most of UK, but higher, at 30% in Scotland, will probably end very soon. Every day our new government is announcing new spending / cutting decisions and people don’t want to miss out. While in most places the grants approvals process is instant, in Scotland it can take over a month. By the way, you pre-apply for grants. We can tell you how. Many Solartwin customers are applying right now and getting their funds pre-allocated against their names. Before they run out.

Most banks are today paying pitiful interest rates, while inflation is over 3%, so investing in solar can seem attractive, especially given that the Government may bring in a “Renewable Heat Incentive”. This “RHI” is a proposed 20 year annual subsidy (wow!) to solar heating panel users. On top of fuel savings, RHI means tax free income of well over £100 per year per Solartwin – if it happens according to the recent consultation. So people are ordering now to take advantage of the certainty of a low carbon grant (before it runs out) and the possibility of a renewable heat incentive. Today’s short overlap time is a golden opportunity. One thing’s for sure.: if or when the government announces the renewable heat incentive, the capital grants will get the chop on the same day.

VAT on DIY solar may even go up from 17.5% to 20%. People are rushing to beat this rumoured rise by sending their DIY kit orders in now. You can take delivery later. There are also murmurings that rate of VAT on energy may go up from today’s 5% to 10% or even higher. The price of solar installations (not DIY kits) which currently only attract 5% VAT would then follow suit. Even a 5% increase in VAT on solar installations would add around £200 to the price of a typical installation. So again, people are rushing to order now, in case fuel VAT shoots up, dragging up the cost of solar heating along with it.

The pound is on a downwards slide. While this is super duper for UK tourism, because visitors to UK pay less to enjoy our great country, it also means that the price of fuel is, again, likely to go up. So to protect against the unknown, people are ordering solar now.
