Solar water heating systems = Solar panels + solar energy. Solar thermal: solar power & solar hot water. RHI solar thermal panels benefit from using a solar pump.

Solar Pump

What Exactly Is A Solar Pump?

You are probably already aware of solar power and utilizing the incredible power of the sun’s energy to produce electricity or heat water. However, you may not be familiar with our solar pump. This clever device will begin to pump water or other liquids even in very low sunlight conditions. However, the more sunlight that is available, the more water it will pump. This makes it self-regulating.

Technically speaking the Solartwin water pump used in the Solartwin solar water heating system has the following characteristics:

  • Electrically the motor is brushless DC 0-12V variable speed with a peak power point tracker. It starts at low light levels.
  • The pump head is a diaphragm with internal bypass valves to permit reverse steam flow and to allow for a frozen collector.
  • The design and materials used allow the pump to be freeze tolerant.
  • All wetted materials comply with relevant tests and water safety requirements such as BS 6920.

The pump is controlled by a three-sensor solar thermal system solar controller which is designed by Solar Twin Ltd.

Advantages Of A Solar Pump in General.

Solar pumps are often used in solar water heaters because of their many advantages over traditional pumps. Temperature sensors, batteries and electronic controllers are not required when you choose a solar pump. You don’t need to hire an electrician to install it or an electrical permit to use it. In addition, they require virtually no maintenance.

This innovative device utilizes only the renewable energy source of the sun so it is much more economical. A solar pump is also safer because it doesn’t produce high-voltage electricity or consume toxic elements such as diesel fuel or gasoline. The low-voltage electricity produced by a solar pump is completely pollution free!

Uses Of A Solar Pump.

Outside solar, a solar pump can be used to heat the water in your home or commercial building. It is also an effective device that can be used for low-flow irrigation. A solar pump can also be used to supply water to remote areas, pump wells, water livestock or wildlife or provide water to camp sites. The new solar pumps are much less expensive than the first models that were designed. They are much more convenient and economical to use than a generator in remote sites.

Zero Carbon Solar Panel Pumps

Solar pumps are a key component in the new zero-carbon solar water heating systems. Solartwin produce one such zero-carbon solar water heating system. Inside Solartwin’s patented black solar heat absorber, within its solar collector, are flexible water channels. Double glazing in the front of the solar absorber surface lets the sun’s heat & light in and makes them very hot. Daylight runs an “intelligent” variable speed solar electric pump. This pumps cold water, via a narrow pipe, from the bottom of your existing hot water cylinder into the bottom of the solar panel. Here, the water heats up. Such systems are not reliant on fossil fuels to heat water as the heat absorber transfers heat into the water and the photovoltaic-powered pump circulates the water within the system, from water store to splar panel and back again.

Such solar water heating systems, which use solar electric pumps and which are not connected to mains electricity can be classified as zero-carbon and are more environmentally friendly than some other types of solar panels. A great benefit in subsidy schemes such as the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI).

The Solar Trade Association have kicked us out in retaliation for exposing misconduct by STA members and sending them a bill for damages.

What on earth has happened? It is about a multi-stranded boycott of a disruptive technology. Here’s a wee smidgin of the Solartwin story… Back in the 1990′s, while working as a freelance science and technology journalist I featured Kerr MacGregor’s amazing freeze tolerant solar panel patent on BBC Radio 4′s “You and Yours” consumer  programme.
