Solar news: 9 Nov 2010. Latecomers to the Feed In Tariff “could lose out”

PV solar news: imminent FIT cuts rumoured in UK.

A crash cut in Great Britain’s solar electric panels PV subsidy called the Feed in Tariff (FIT) is looking increasingly likely following the emergence of companies offering free PV installations (in return for 25 years of subsidy) and the impending large scale development of solar farms in Cornwall.

Just look at the huge scale of these planned new PV solar farms. A domestic scale PV installation is usually 1, 2 3 or 4 kWp in size. A commercial, FIT-subsidised PV farm can be over 1000 times this size at 5000 kWp.

These huge new solar fields will soak up subsidy so fast that there will soon be little or even none left at all – the regular story of start-stop government green energy subsidy. There are said to be about 85 planning permissions in progress for giant scale 5000 kWp (aka 5MWp) FiT PV farms. 25 of these are in Cornwall, which is the sunniest part of UK.
If these solar farms are built in 2011, they will suck up virtually ALL of the available cash for FIT’s. The government is rumoured to be concerned and to be watching VERY closely. Buy solar panels now because latecomers to the Feed in Tariff (FIT) may lose out as rates are cut according to the FT 6-7 November 2010’s longer print version of this story

Financial Times 6-7 Nov Opinion: Latecomers to the Feed In Tariff “could lose out”

Daily Mail 12 Nov Article: “Clampdown pulls plug on march of solar farm speculators”

The effect on national security policy is mixed. One aim of renewable energy policy is to discourage dependence on energy imports for strategic reasons and because the financial outflow which damage UK’s balance of trade. Yet most UK solar farms will be built with imported solar panels whose purchase is funded by European bank loans. The farms will take agricultural land out of production, thus affecting UK’s food security.

Energy minister Greg Barker said subsidies for renewable power should not be exploited by companies planning massive ‘sun farms’ in rural areas.

Will the funds run out – as a FIT review is taking place? Government had already announced that FITs will be reviewed in 2012, a year ahead of their original schedule, unless “higher than expected deployment” required an early review. Government has also already identified scope to cut FIT costs by 10 per cent. Will 10% really be the figure? One “centre right” think tank is calling for the complete abolition of FIT’s.

Go for solar today order your peak rate FIT subsidised solar PV panels from Solartwin now!
