Likely VAT rise may increase the price of DIY solar water heating panel prices – soon.
Britain’s new coalition Conservative / Liberal government has publcly committed itself to implementing a £6 billion cuts / tax-raising budget – 50 days after taking office.
However, several policy compromises made during the coalition-making horse-trading are likely to actually increase government spending by £10 billion. So a tax rise is now on the agenda.
Economic pundits on the main news websites are forecasting a VAT rise from today’s 17.5% to either 19% or 20%. This hike will further disincentive the most cost effective way of going solar by raising yet again, the unfair tax gap between the cost of polluting energy, which is taxed at only 5% and the cost of energy saving technology (such as DIY solar panels and home insulation) which is already taxed at 17.5% and which seems likely to go ever higher soon.
Such a VAT rise, if implemented, will increase the price of a DIY Solartwin solar water heating kit by £33-£55. This follow a similar VAT rise in January 2010 (from 15% to 17.5%, which itself prompted a flood of DIY solar kit orders, in the weeks preceding the rise).
If you, like the money pundits, think this budget may deliver an increase in VAT, then you might like to choose to order a Solartwin DIY kit at today’s 17.5% VAT rate.
Based on past VAT guidelines, a signed order plus a deposit is all that is needed to secure a contract at today’s VAT rate.
