Ding! Round 3 of UK government’s solar PV FIT legality fisticuffs starts.

Breaking UK solar news: yawn…

Right up against tomorrow’s deadline, DECC HAS confirmed that it WILL appeal the FIT legality decision made against it in the High Court. The impact of this on us may be up to a year of delay before we actually know whether it is 43p or 21p from 12 Dec 2011 to 2 March 2012. Of course DECC might just drop its new appeal on 2 March, its market-dampening impact no longer being needed after this date.

In summary, the UK government have pressed on with their bungling battle to, at the last possible moment, against Friends of the Earth by moving up to the Supreme Court.

The purpose of this action is to (multiple choice question follows):

  • save face for DECC’s mouldering mandarins
  • save face for their law abiding ex-minister thingydriverwhathisname
  • save the solar PV FIT money pot from being over-over-overspent
  • buy more consumer discouragement time until 2 March, if they pull put then
  • buy time for perhaps a year, if they don’t pull out earlier
  • destabilise the UK solar PV industry
  • randomise, via the courts, UK energy policy
  • deliver to the nuclearites and fossilbods another wee favour
  • plough on regardless of mere common sense or evidence
  • enrich needy but deserving lawyers during a recession
  • other (please state concisely)

(Tick which you think is relevant. You can tick more than one option. No talking in the exam hall please. Don’t laugh either. Nor groan. Discreet silent yawning is permitted, provided it is not in Morse Code.)

Barry Johnston, MD of Solar Twin Ltd opined disrespectfully today: “DECC are just doing what they are good at: shutting a door which they knowing left open after they watched a horse bolting, while meanwhile ensuring that the UK renewables industry cannot have a business plan which investors will do anything other than jeer at.”
