PV Solar Panels and Photovoltaically Pumped Solar Thermal panels for Water Heating from Solartwin: About Us

Mission statement |  Company history |  Trade association members

 Mission Statement

1 – To reduce global warming by becoming a major provider of the best solar PV and solar water heating systems, while keeping our solar panels affordable..

2 – To become recognised as the top solar company, the one which brought solar PV and solar water heating from the green ghetto into the mainstream!”

Solar energy powered self sufficiency is what we want to give the world. More specifically, zero carbon homes using alternative green energy products – additional to what are currently available – are how we see ourselves improving our lives and the environment.

Solar sustainability is our environmental policy. At Solartwin, we enjoy the challenge of shrinking your greenhouse gas emissions and energy bills more cost effectively than conventional old solar water heating. The UK government plans a 12-20% emissions cut for global warming gases, depending on which target you look at. However, climatologists calculate that real sustainability needs more than a 70% cut. You can help to close this gap using clean, renewable solar energy in the comfortable form of solar hot water! Solartwin offer solar direct to you with no intermediaries. And we want to be one of Europe’s top solar water heating companies in order to help you do this.

Environmentally efficient solar panels are our core business, so you can be confident that we really know what we are doing.

Solar Twin Ltd. is a UK based solar energy company supplying solar thermal (solar water heating) and photovoltaic (PV or solar electricity) systems globally. For information, our solar water heating systems are radically different as we use patented flexible silicone tubing throughout, meaning no anti-freeze is needed when you collect solar energy. Our simple solar panels eliminate planned maintenance, as solar anti-freeze has to be replaced periodically. We also use a PV (solar electric) unit to power the entire solar water heating system. Hence, no mains electricity is used, so the pump is powered for free and our solar energy customers get all the savings. We can often reuse a household hot water cylinder. This means your solar hot water system can be installed in under a day – less disruption. We supply fully installed solar heating systems, or DIY kits. We can install solar energy systems to vented, pressurised or combi hot water systems. Lots of free solar information is on our website.

Company history

Solar Twin Ltd are direct solar panel suppliers, providing solar PV and solar water heating systems to both trade and retail customers.

Formed in 1998 following two years of research and development in developing innovative and eco-efficient solar panels panels to collect solar energy more sustainably than than most solar water heating technologies, we aim to be the best solar business – and this has been acknowledged by Ethical Consumer Magazine, who awarded us this accolade in 2006. We  install solar water heating systems throughout UK and Ireland, and  export solar DIY kits worldwide. We number twenty employees working in the direct solar business plus numerous solar component suppliers, solar installation subcontractors and solar resellers.

Solartwin solar water heating panels are a  unique British revolution in solar panel technology, Solartwin delivers a reliable, quickly fitted and  affordable solar water heating system. It is based on a Scottish engineer’s sudden insight on how to avoid the problem of frozen pipes in solar panels bursting in winter – by just letting them freeze – flexibly! Invented and patented by Kerr MacGregor atNapier University, Edinburgh, and developed in conjunction with Solar Twin Ltd, his innovation exploits recent advances in materials science. Kerr identified highly flexible, thermally conductive pipes to accommodate the problem that water expands when it freezes. This ‘freeze-tolerance’ eliminates, at a stroke, any need for inefficient heat exchangers and antifreezes, and the numerous costly and power-draining control peripherals normally associated with conventional solar water heating.

As a solar technology, besides using a unique a freeze-tolerant solar panel, Solartwin’s unique solar pumping system uses low speed single pass water flows through the panel, rather than less efficient fast multiple passes. In addition, all of the parasitic mains electricity consumption normally associated with pumps, 24 hour solar controller circuitry and various other peripherals is completely eliminated by using a dedicated low power, variable speed, solar powered pump. Based on new high torque, rare-earth magnet technology, it is powered totally from a small, off-grid photovoltaic module. Solartwin solar panel installation usually  takes less than a day to fit. Its name comes from combining both solar thermal and solar electricity into one system to de.liver solar thermal for low carbon and zero carbon homes. Made in UK, the aluminium it contains is bought mainly from Norway because there it can be made with hydro-electricity, rather than conventional fossil fuel power.

The Solar Trade Association have kicked us out in retaliation for exposing misconduct by STA members and sending them a bill for damages.

What on earth has happened? It is about a multi-stranded boycott of a disruptive technology. Here’s a wee smidgin of the Solartwin story… Back in the 1990′s, while working as a freelance science and technology journalist I featured Kerr MacGregor’s amazing freeze tolerant solar panel patent on BBC Radio 4′s “You and Yours” consumer  programme.
